whew.
what a whirlwind of a week! school is definitely keeping me hopping...quick abbreviated storytime here.
* i had a small child literally use the words "i don't write". i laughed and told him that he would be writing in my room. girls, it's war. this kiddo is a piece and a half of work. i'll win, but it may get messy...
*i endured hours of training...adia, NOTHING like your all day madness, it was two two-hour sessions, one on data analysis, and the other on FBA/BIP. i ask you, WHY is it necessary for me to attend these things when we spent an entire SEMESTER doing this? i swear, everyone thinks that because i'm new, i know nothing. go figure.
*the cde (colorado department of ed) can't process my application for employment because, big surprise here, michigan state hasn't returned the one crucial piece of it that needs to be signed by the dean. i love our alma mater. (lots and lots of sarcasm here.) as a result, i'm technically NOT licensed to teach in CO, thus jeopardizing my school and quite possibly my career as well. go state.
*big news: I BOUGHT A CAR!!!! small news: i may be teaching human development....
opinion time - you girls know me better than most, and you know special ed so well. help me make a decision, please? my 5th grade team approached me and asked if i would be willing to take a small group during science time and teach them. naturally, i got really excited and said YES! before thinking. the small group would consist of my sped kids and a couple NEPs (non english proficient speakers). now, the dilemma is that i would be seeing them for about 75% of their day with this time included. i feel that i would not only be over-servicing them, but i would be doing them a disservice, in that when they go to middle school next year they will hardly be serviced at all. if i took them for that huge amount of time, they wouldn't be prepared for the onslaught of middle school classes. but i really want to to teach science, and i know they'd learn so much better if they were in my class.
what do i do?
opinions, please!
love you girls :)

Would it be possible to do a split kinda of thing? or at least a trial basis. I would express your concern about the students spending 75% of their time with you. but see if you could do it on a trial. Would you be teaching the same curriculum as the 5th grade teachers? if so could you take the students twice or three times a week and then have them in the gen ed the other time? i dont know just thinking out loud here.
ReplyDeleteI think you should do what is best for the kids. I would see about co-teaching sience to them in the classroom. The same curriculm just tailoring it to their needs. I would also take other students to make it a small group and not just you teaching the kids with ieps or in esl. It sounds like the teachers are trying to get rid of them to me which is not cool. I think it is great if you could teach science, but I wouldn't take them out more than noted on the IEP. Maybe go in and make it hands on occationally for them. Or give them support without taking over. As the year goes, you also dont want to take on too much because I am sure your caseload may get heavier.
ReplyDeleteHOPE THAT HELPS A LITTLE!
