baby, it's cold outside.

yep.
snowed today.
the thermometer literally read 29 degrees on my ride home tonight.
go CO :)

though it was adorable scooting the little children onto the buses amidst the swirling flakes this afternoon. zipped up in their hoodies, small bodies would come up and hug me, often adding some comment such as "i like the snow," or "brrr, it's cold!". you know, something very profound in their minds. it never ceases to amuse me when i get hugs from strange children.

had a great moment today, teaching my interventions class. i don't remember why, but we all just burst out laughing, real laughter, for a solid two minutes. and i did think to myself, "this is why i love kids. this is why i teach. this is good."

so, faith reinstalled in the profession of teaching, i come to you all with a question. what kind of behavior systems did your sped teachers use last year? Adia, i got you girl. i know what Gwen used, but i'm wondering what Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Paulsen did to institute an effective behavior management system. i've got some ADHD kiddos sans meds that could really use a good system...so any insight would be much appreciated :)

ps. administered the woodcock today. didn't get to doitability. but you better believe i chuckled to myself all the same.

  1. Ah doitability!! LOL!!! Weren't we just talking about how it hasn't gotten cold in CO yet, well look what we did, we made it snow! HAHA :)

    As for the behavior management techniques for Neysa she used multiple different things. We had the traffic light for time outs and loss of privileges, we had the bears when the traffic light was at its end or when something bad happened, then we had the daily reports home to the parents and the children also saw them everyday to know how we thought their days went, we had coins at to fill their piggy banks at the end of the day based on how many coins and bears they had, we used "caught being good" coins we gave to the children at random. Thats what i can remember now. If i remember more I let you know.

  2. Last year Paulsen did sticker charts for good behavior they could earm up to three at subject time and they could get strikes to loose them. They also had to take breaks. We had students on charts as well. Tomas was on a smile face system for each subject/time and she circles smile or frowns with reinforcement. For the third graders they had a daily schedule and for each subject they could earn a sticker and for so many stickers they earned rewards, If they didn't their were consequences. For misbehavior and missed work they stayed in at lunch or after school.

    This year I am using a really cool system in the third grade. It is called the zone. All the kids have clips on a bucket. The goal is for it to stay there, in the zone. Then each teacher has a meter sick colored areas of green(warning),yellow (timeout), red(think sheet), black (write up and call home). If a student does anything like distrupt or something serious the teacher just tells them to move their clip and they put it to the next color. The kids no that there is no fight and no questions. If they do they move it again. If they cause problems in specials they get moved twice. If they try to move the clip back it is an automatic red or write up depending on where they are. THis is all connected to zone bucks. If they are in the zome at the end of the day they get 2 dollars on record. Green $1 yellow $0 Red -$1 Black $-5 dollars. at the end of the week they get the money they have earned and can save it or spend it for homework passes, change of seat for a day, 20 min on computer, bring i pod to school, etc. For my kids on behavior plans they get dollars based on goals. So one of my kids is working on behaviors so he can earn a dollar a day for each behavior he shows. (15 a week instead of the 10 like the other kids.) if he gets on the meter stick i take off money from the total and note it on his behavior sheet. My ADHD kid is using a self monitor chart from tough kid tool box for each period or subject of the day. Hope this helps!!!
